Dense Molecular Gas Tracers in the Outflow of the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253

چکیده
We present a detailed study of a molecular outflow feature in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 using ALMA. We find that this feature is clearly associated with the edge of NGC 253ʼs prominent ionized outflow, has a projected length of ∼300 pc, with a width of ∼50 pc, and a velocity dispersion of ∼40 km s, which isconsistent with an ejection from the disk about 1 Myr ago. The kinematics of the molecular gas in this feature can be interpreted (albeit not uniquely) as accelerating at a rate of 1 km s pc. In this scenario, the gas is approaching an escape velocity at the last measured point. Strikingly, bright tracers of dense molecular gas (HCN, CN, HCO, CS) are also detected in the molecular outflow: we measure an HCN(1–0)/CO(1–0) line ratio of ~1 10 in the outflow, similar to that in the central starburst region of NGC 253 and other starburst galaxies. By contrast, the HCN/CO line ratio in the NGC 253 disk is significantly lower (~1 30), similar to other nearby galaxy disks. This strongly suggests that the streamer gas originates from the starburst, and that its physical state does not change significantly over timescales of ∼1Myr during its entrainment in the outflow. Simple calculations indicate that radiation pressure is not the main mechanism for driving the outflow. The presence of such dense material in molecular outflows needs to be accounted for in simulations of galactic outflows.

Chandra Observations of the Evolving Core of the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253
Chandra observations of the core of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 reveal a heavily absorbed source of hard X-rays embedded within the nuclear starburst region. The source has an unabsorbed, 2 to 10 keV luminosity of ≥ 10 erg s and photoionizes the surrounding gas. We observe this source through a dusty torus with a neutral absorbing column density of NH ∼ 2 × 10 23 cm. The torus is hundre...

We report the detection of 1720 and 1612 MHz OH ground–state satellite line maser regions in the starburst galaxy NGC 253. We find ten compact maser features all of which are located along the narrow ridge of bright radio continuum emission within the central 10 square arcseconds of the nucleus. The compact OH features appear physically associated with regions of dense molecular gas, supernova ...

Ultra Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies (ULIRGs) – gas-rich mergers harboring the most extreme star-forming conditions encountered in the local Universe – are thought to re-enact the galaxy formation processes we are only barely able to glimpse in the distant Universe. We show that the starburst-driven outflow in the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 forms a well-defined collimated bubble which has an extent of ∼ 1 kpc and a closed shell at its edge, as seen in Hα, [O III], and 5 GHz radio continuum. The shell coincides with the maximum in intensity and linewidths of [O III] lines in a blueshifted emission nebula which was previously detected via optical spectroscopy ...
